Website update!

Hi friends and visitors!

Thanks for visiting our website - we know it's been a while since we updated - best laid plans and all that! We're hoping to make the website even better for all of you, so please bear with us while we make these improvements. The good news is... We are definitely still going (better than ever!) and we are thrilled to take on new members. Take a look at the info below, send us an email at balhamwomensinstitute@gmail.com or visit us on Instagram. We'd love to chat to you!

Membership is £46 for the year from April to March and covers everything at main meetings. You are also welcome to try-before-you-buy, by attending one meeting to decide if you’d like to join as a member. We ask for a contribution of £5 to attend as a guest, which is taken off your membership if you join on the same night. If you'd like to visit as a guest, just pop us a message!

We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm at The Bedford (upstairs in the cocktail bar). Balham WI has been running since 2008 and we have a firm ethos of friendship, allyship and kindness, we aim to be as welcoming as possible as London can be such a transient place and it's often hard to make friends. As well as socialising and crafting we can campaign on issues such as FGM, domestic violence and ovarian cancer. We support and fundraise for our local women's refuge.

As well as our main meeting, we have a book club, a supper club and a craft club for members only. Our main Facebook group can be found if you search for Balham WI, and event invites are listed there at least 2 weeks before the meeting.

Membership runs April to March and is pro-rated (it reduces by £11 per quarter) so how much you pay will depend on when you join. We cannot guarantee a space later in the year. This covers everything at meetings and sub groups, apart from the cost of books etc if you are in the book group or your food if you attend supper club! We may occasionally ask you to bring an item from home to use, like a glass jar or a pair of scissors.
Monthly meetings are a mix of topics based on our motto "culture, charity, craft and cake"!
If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask!

Social evening at Megan's, Balham

Recently we were invited to come along to a special opening evening at Megan's restaurant in Balham. There are 2 things the ladies of Balham WI love: a chance to chat with each other and a chance to eat & drink while doing so! So we were quite excited to have a chance to check out this new neighbour to our community.

Everyone who came along to our little BWI social night had a really lovely night. The food was tasty and the company was superb! Thanks to Megan's for the invite!

July meeting | London Beekeepers Association

Our July meeting was abuzz as we welcomed Richard and Natalie from the London Beekeepers Association to talk to us about bees in London.
We learned all sorts about bees and, notably, that the #1 thing we can all do to help save bees of all sorts (there are over 200 varieties in Britain) is to plant bee-friendly plants in our gardens, windowboxes, and flowerpots.
We enjoyed observing the small active hive that Richard brought along and some of us even located the queen! A treat at the end of the night was sampling local honeys from hives in SW12 and SW17!

Falcon Road Festival 2018

A glorious sunny day was the perfect setting for our annual cakes and bakes sale at the Falcon Road Festival in Battersea. Beautiful cakes, traybakes, cookies, and more were on offer and were very well-received by festival-goers young and old.
As our biggest fundraiser of the year, we were thrilled that ASDA Clapham Junction offered to match up to £300, which will really help us to use the monies raised to offer educational opportunities (such as bursaries to Denman College) to our members!
