Falcon Road Festival 2018

A glorious sunny day was the perfect setting for our annual cakes and bakes sale at the Falcon Road Festival in Battersea. Beautiful cakes, traybakes, cookies, and more were on offer and were very well-received by festival-goers young and old.
As our biggest fundraiser of the year, we were thrilled that ASDA Clapham Junction offered to match up to £300, which will really help us to use the monies raised to offer educational opportunities (such as bursaries to Denman College) to our members!

Surrey Federation Centenary Fair

 This year the Surrey Federation of Women's Institutes turns 100. We enjoyed celebrating the National centenary in 2015, and 2018 has had a lot of fun and more local events as our federation celebrates its own milestone.
 The London group of the Surrey Federation held a Centenary Fair on 9 June at Barnes Green Centre. Our own Balham WI had a terrarium making stall (after that activity was incredibly popular amongst members last year). It was a beautiful day out and a fun way to meet members of the public and share the WI love!

Christmas crafting fundraiser

On 22 November, we were very excited to host a sold out night of Christmas crafting to benefit our chosen charity, Hestia Wandsworth women's refuge.
2 sessions were held at The Exhibit and attendees were able to create one large and one small seasonal make.


Many member as well as lots of new faces attended. In addition to getting the word out about Balham WI, we raised a bit over £300 to help Hestia Wandsworth's wonderful work.

Falcon Road Festival 2017



This year was the 2nd incarnation of the Falcon Road Festival in Battersea and after last year's great success, we returned on July 1st with another stall full of delicious cakes and bakes made by our members. The festival also saw the debut of our brand new Balham WI banner!

It was a gorgeous day and we were so glad to get to know more members of the community - many who had no idea the WI existed in London or that there was an institute so near. In addition to peddling our tasty creations, we also shared our new BWI informational flyers with lots of people - including the Mayor of Wandsworth - and had a lot of interest from local women in becoming members. We hope to see many new faces at upcoming meetings!

Our secretary, Laura, was interviewed twice during the day about Balham WI. Once on camera for Big Local SW11 (one of the festival's organising groups) and later by Wandsworth Radio. We're told the radio spot should be a part of the Wandsworth Tonight programme on Friday and we're keeping our ears open for it!

Thanks to all the members who baked and who helped out at the stall. We had a very successful fundraising day and will be able to put the proceeds to good use in 2018 programming and education.

Bake Sale @ Falcon Road Heritage Festival

  
After a long absence from the WWI calendar, a bake sale returned! We participated in the Falcon Road Heritage Festival in Battersea on Saturday, 25 June. Lots of members, both long-standing and brand-new helped out by baking and by working at our stall. 


Although 2 crazy downpours kept us on our toes, the day was quite beautiful for the most part and we raised over £450 (to be shared between our efforts to start a Denman bursary and with Hestia Wandsworth). Cake is clearly always a good idea.

Charity Bake Sale!!!

Wandsworth WI 5k, 10k and 15k Race

We are hoping to get a team together to raise money for Wandsworth Women's Aid. There are a series of races organised on Clapham Common which will be ideal as a venue for our race. You can enter a 15k or 10k or 5k race - your choice! Please sign up and let Maddy know that you are taking part. There is ample opportunity between now and then to train - we could even go out together!

Big Walk, Little Splash

Between now and the 16th September, to celebrate the 2012 Olympics, Wandsworth WI is taking up the challenge to...
Walk, or swim, 209 miles - the equivalent of the distance between Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch to the Olympic Stadium, London (as the crow flies) between the 1st April and 16th September!
We need all our members to take part so that we can enter and WIN!
All you need to do to take part is to let Maddy know and pledge a number of miles you think you might be able to contribute. We need to record everyone's efforts in a little book so when you walk/swim could you jot down the following info:
Your name
Location
How far you went
What the weather was like
An observation e.g. Fantastic flowers, fabulous swimming costumes etc. (the funnier the better)
Send this info by email using the website or give it in on a piece of paper when you come to a meeting!
There are a few rules:
• Walking or swimming only - nothing else will do!
• we can walk together but total mileage will be how far everyone walked rather than a cumulative one i.e. 5 members walking 5 miles will be 5 miles rather than 25!
• We need everyone to take part - the more the merrier! Even if you can only do a little - it all counts!

Team Santa 2011

On 4th December 2011, an intrepid team of Wandsworth WI members will join hundreds of other runners for the Santa Run in Greenwich Park. Donning our suitably festive suits and fake beards, Team Santa members Arabella, Caroline, Claire, Jude, Kate and Maddy will wend their way around the 5k or 10k routes, raising funds for our chosen charity, Wandsworth Women's Aid.
WWA is our local branch of the national domestic violence charity, Women's Aid, which nationally helps up to 250,000 women and children every year. They work to end violence against women and children, and support over 500 domestic and sexual violence services across the country. Wandsworth WI is very proud to raise money for them.
